I may be biased because I live in San Diego, but it has some of the best things to do in the country. Balboa Park, the San Diego Zoo, and the USS Midway Museum attract hundreds of thousands of visitors each year.
Still, sometimes you just have that itch to ditch the city for the open road. That’s why I have compiled this guide of the best weekend road trips from San Diego.
From desert escapes and mountain hikes to coastal drives, this list caters to every type of adventure traveler hoping to recharge their soul.

Best Time of the Year for Road Trips from San Diego
San Diego is on the Pacific Coast, so it has cool, wet winters and warm, dry summers. But, depending on what you want to see or do on your weekend road trip, you should plan ahead.
If you want fewer crowds and sunny weather, visit in spring (March, April, and May) or fall (September, October, and November).
This is also the best time to visit Idyllwild, Joshua Tree, Valle de Guadalupe, and Lake Arrowhead, as you may get better deals on accommodation.
Big Bear Lake is beautiful no matter when you visit.
But taking the road trip in summer means being rewarded with fun water sports among the pine-dotted forests for daring to drive in the heat.
I’ll go into more detail about what to do at each location below.
Weekend Getaways from San Diego
From mountain highs to coastal sighs, your perfect San Diego weekend getaway is just a scenic drive away. Here are my top picks.
Idyllwild
Distance from San Diego: 111 miles
Drive time: 2 hours 10 minutes
Where to stay: The town offers many great camping and cabin options, such as Idyllwind Inn
Idyllwild is a quirky town in the San Jacinto Mountains. It is filled with outdoor activities and artsy fun. You could easily spend more than a weekend here.

Hike Suicide Rock or Devil’s Slide
These names sound intimidating, but I promise they’re not that bad. They just require a little more effort to complete, as they are moderate to hard.
Suicide Rock is the easiest of the two, offering beautiful views of Strawberry Valley and the San Jacinto Mountains.
Devil’s Slide, on the other hand, requires a bit more skill and takes about 3 to 4 hours to complete. But the wilderness views, chirping birds, and dog-friendly trail make it worth it.
Have Dinner at Idyllwild Brewpub
Idyllwild Brewpub has been offering its patrons cocktails and beers on tap for almost a decade.
This watering hole is a favorite spot for lunch and dinner, serving hearty comfort food and idyllic views of Strawberry Creek.

Meet the town Mayor
Typically, this wouldn’t be on a things to do list for a weekend getaway, but this funky mountain town may be different.
Mayor Max III is an incredibly friendly golden retriever who doesn’t mind meeting all of his fans, especially if you bring along a treat.
He often makes public appearances in between overseeing administration and attending council meetings.
Valle De Guadalupe, MX
Distance from San Diego: 85 miles
Drive time: 1 hour 50 minutes
Where to stay: This cabin is the perfect place to escape into the wilderness for a bit
Described as Mexico’s Napa Valley, Valle De Guadalupe is the perfect weekend getaway from San Diego if you enjoy wine, galleries, and art.

Visit top wineries
This agricultural region is brimming with award-winning wineries (over 150) and vineyards.
Book cellar tours and wine tastings at these wineries near my top picks of Valle De Guadalupe hotels for easy access:
- Monte Xanic Bodega Vinícola near Hotel Boutique Valle de Guadalupe & Spa
- El Cielo Bodega Vinícola near Cielo Resort
- Decantos Vinicola near Indomito Resort & Hotel Boutique
- Finca Altozano near Casa Michaus Valle de Guadalupe

Have an off-roading adventure
Get a unique vantage point of the region with a ride through the vineyards on this ATV wine farm tour.
Dine at farm-to-table restaurants for Baja cuisine
Going through the restaurant lists, you’ll see Finca Altozano being named again and again.
This is because it offers stunning views over Guadalupe Valley vineyards and authentic Baja cuisine alongside top service.

Big Bear Lake
Distance from San Diego: 145 miles
Drive Time: 2 hours 40 minutes
Where to stay: Lagonita Lodge and Big Bear Chateau make for the perfect nature getaways
Taking a weekend trip from San Diego to Big Bear Lake usually means two things: snowboarding and/or hiking. This small city is big on outdoor activities, so pack your boots and sunblock.

Have fun at Alpine Slide at Magic Mountain
Alpine Slide at Magic Mountain has many fun activities that your inner child will thank you for. From go-karts to the famous Alpine Slide, it has plenty to keep you busy for a whole day.
Explore 23 miles of water (or snow) activities
Big Bear is well-known for its water activities, such as boating, kayaking, and jet-skiing. In winter, it is covered in a blanket of snow, making it ideal for snowboarding, skiing, and snowtubing.
Hike popular trails
The most well-known trails for breathtaking mountain views are Castle Rock, Pine Knot, and Cougar Crest.
Stroll through Big Bear Village
This alpine-themed part of town is where you’ll find cozy dining and shopping spots.
It’s also a great place to burn a few hours, with escape rooms, a bowling alley, and a movie theater.
Lake Arrowhead
Distance from San Diego: 130 miles
Drive Time: 2 hours 20 minutes
Where to stay: I love this single-story cabin with a hot tub in the woods
Lake Arrowhead is ideal for anyone who loves quiet San Diego getaways. It isn’t nicknamed the “Alps of Southern California” for nothing.

Hikes
While I was here, I really enjoyed the Will Abel Memorial Trail, Heart Rock, and Arrowhead Pinnacles hikes. All of these offer gentle nature walks and beautiful views.
Cool off at Lake Gregory
Lake Gregory is a very popular place for a variety of outdoor activities, from paddleboarding to skateboarding and tennis.
Explore Lake Arrowhead Village
This is the place to go to for shopping, dining, and live music with a cozy mountain-town vibe.
It’s in the downtown area that transforms into a magical wonderland come winter, making it a fantastic stop no matter the season.
Bonus tip: I loved these restaurants while visiting: Lakefront Taproom, LouEddie’s Pizza, Rippin Bowls, and Mountain Coffee!
Joshua Tree
Distance from San Diego: 164 miles
Drive Time: 2 hours 40 minutes
Where to stay: The Bungalows, Casa Luisa Joshua Tree, and The Outpost Joshua Tree are my top dog-friendly picks.
This is one of the best road trips from San Diego, which is why I already have a complete weekend itinerary right here.
But here are a few more amazing things to do that didn’t make my initial list.

Go rock climbing and canyoneering
It should come as no surprise that Joshua Tree has many rock climbing spots and places to explore the slot canyon.
Here are my top picks:
- Arch Rock
- Jumbo Rocks
- Hidden Valley
- Hall of Horrors

Watch the sunset at the Cholla Cactus Garden
Cholla Cactus Garden is in the national park in the Pinto Basin. This is one of the best places to visit near San Diego for sunset views and stunning stargazing after dark.
